Florida Boating Safety Regulations
When we talk about Florida Boating Safety Requirements, it is important to know all the rules and regulations to make you’re boating day both safe and enjoyable. Personal Flotation Devices: For boats under 16ft., one lifejacket per person while the boat is underway. For boats larger than 16 ft., the same rule applies with the addition of one throwable Type IV device. Note: An additional lifejacket is required for all activities for which the boat is being used such as waterskiing, tubing etc. Fire Extinguisher: For boats up to an including 25 feet you must carry a hand held portable B-1 type on extinguisher. For boats 26 ft. to 39 ft., you need two portable hand held extinguishers or one B-11 type. For boats 40 ft and larger you need at least three hand held B-1’s or one B-1 PLUS a B-11 type of extinguisher. Note: when purchasing your extinguishers, be sure it reads COAST GUARD APPROVED. Visual distress signals: For boats under 16 ft., you must carry approved visual distress signals for nighttime use. For boats larger than 16 ft., you must carry visual distress signals approved for both day and night use. Note: These visual distress signals are only required on coastal waters. Bells and Whistles: Every vessel less than 12 meters or 39.4 ft in length must carry an efficient sound producing device. For vessels over 12 meters but less than 20 meters or 65.6 ft in length, you must carry a whistle and a bell. The whistle must be audible for ½ a nautical mile and the bell must be 200 mm or 7.87 inches in diameter. Ventilation: This is a two part section. The first pertains to boats built before August 1, 1980. These boats need two ventilator ducts with cowls or equivalent for the purpose of ventilating the bilges of every closed engine and fuel tank compartment. For boats built after August 1, 1980, you need two ventilator ducts for ventilating every closed compartment that contains a gas engine and every compartment containing a gasoline tank. If you have a permanently installed talk which vents outside the boat, this must contain a power operated exhaust blower which can be controlled from the instrument panel. Back-Fire Flame Arrestor: One approved device on each carburetor of all gasoline engines installed after April 25th 1940. Note: Outboard motors are excluded from this rule. There are a few other things that are not required to have on board but are a good idea to take with you when you are underway. A cell phone or a VHF radio, these are good ideas in case you would need some help. A first aid kit containing antibacterial cleanser, bandages, aspirin, tweezers and a small sewing kit will keep you and your crew mates in good health. Line and an anchor are handy to have aboard your vessel. A few lines of different length can also be quite handy not only for yourself but if you would have to help another boater. A paddle, of course this would depend on the size of your boat. Some comfort items such as hats, raincoat, towels, snacks, water and sunblock will make your voyage truly pleasurable.
